Sideoats Grama is a long-lived, warm-season mid-grass. Normally it grows as a bunch grass, but some strains may have underground roots, stocks or rhizomes. Conditions like this are found mostly in Northern and Eastern strains.

EL RENO is outstanding in leafiness, forage production and vigor. It ranks well in disease resistance, seed production and winter hardiness. It is widely used in range seedings and widely adapted in Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas. Original seed source is El Reno, Oklahoma. Increased in Kansas.

BUTTE is long-lived and relatively early maturing. It is winter hardy and makes the best growth response under long days. It is best adapted to areas with relatively short growing seasons. Butte has large carry over and exhibits excellent seedling vigor for establishment. Original seed source is Holt and Platte Counties, Nebraska.

KILDEER is recommend for use in pasture and range seedings in the Northern Great Plains. It grows best on well drained uplands, shallow ridges and rocky areas of varying soil types. Call for price and availability.

AREA OF ADAPTATION: Sideoats Grama is found in range sites of up to 8,000 feet elevation. It is adapted to a wide range of soil and climatic conditions, but prefers medium to coarse-textured soils. It is an important plant for use in re-seeding programs for many plains and foothills sites as a mixture or used alone. A 12 to 25 inch MAP zone is recommended. The plant has moderate drought resistance.

PLANTING: The seed is chaffy in nature and is best planted with special grass drills. Plant at 1/4 inch depth on fine textured soils and 3/4 inch on coarser textured soils. Plant 4 to 6 lbs. PLS per acre for dryland pasture and 3 to 5 lbs. per acre for rangeland seeding. Plant in the spring or early summer in order to germinate and establish seedlings while the soil is warm. Dormant seedings after November 1st have proven very successful.

MANAGEMENT: Sideoats Grama is used for pasture and occasionally for hay. It is used often in mixtures for seeding eroded fields and depleted ranges. It has moderate grazing tolerance and a 3 to 6 inch stubble should be left to maintain a better range condition.

SEEDING RATE: 3 to 5 PLS lbs. per acre

NUMBER OF SEED: 135,000 seeds per lb.
