Needle and Thread begins growth early in the spring and goes dormant in early to mid summer. It has good forage value for livestock before fruiting, but the awns can cause injuries. Needle & Thread will grow from June to July. It is common to the prairie, plains and foothills of the western United States.
It is very drought tolerant and prefers excessively drained sands. Needle and Thread begins growth in early spring, flowers in June and matures in July. It is not known to be vulnerable to insects or other pests.
