Chufa, an African variation of nutsedge, is primarily used as food for wild turkeys. These plants produce nut-like tubers underground. Turkeys, deer, and other wildlife will root underground to get at the sweet tubers.

Chufa is best planted in April or May, and may not work well in the northern U.S. due to shorter growing seasons. It can be utilized by wildlife throughout the winter in southern parts of the country.
